How Fibre Works
Who Does What – FNO vs ISP
When it comes to fibre internet, both the FNO and the ISP play important roles, but they do different things. Here’s a simple guide to help you understand who’s responsible for what.
FNO stands for Fibre Network Operator. They build, install, and maintain the fibre cables and equipment in your area.
FNO Responsibilities:
Laying and maintaining fibre cables
Trenching and installation work outside your home
Installing the ONT (Optical Network Terminal) inside your home
Fixing any faults on the fibre line
Examples of FNOs:
Vumatel, Frogfoot, Openserve, Octotel, Link Africa, and more.
ISP stands for Internet Service Provider. That’s the company you choose to get internet access from, like Mweb.
ISP Responsibilities:
Activating and managing your fibre package
Supplying and supporting your WiFi router (Excluding Vuma Reach and Webconnect)
Handling your account, billing, and service upgrades
Providing customer support and logging faults with the FNO
